europese verkiezingen

The year 2024 is dominated by European elections. Not exactly a topic you might think has direct relevance to exercise, nutrition, and vitality. Or does it?

No voting recommendation

No, we are not going to get involved in politics, and this blog is therefore not voting advice, but we do want to take a moment to reflect on the impact the elections have on our living environment. Consider, for example, regulations regarding the food trade, but also the position of expats.

Prosperity and economic cooperation in Europe

Our prosperity depends to a large extent on economic cooperation in Europe. Part of this international cooperation is the exchange of expatriates.

Here are a number of reasons why:

Internal Market: The European Union (EU) constitutes an internal market in which goods, services, capital, and people can move freely between the member states. This freedom of trade and mobility stimulates economic growth and competition, which contributes to prosperity growth in all EU member states.

Trade: Economic cooperation within the EU has led to a strong increase in trade between member states. The Netherlands is an export-oriented country, and a large part of our exports goes to other EU countries. Open and free trade within the EU ensures a larger market for Dutch companies and promotes economic growth.

Investments: Through economic integration, Dutch companies have access to investment opportunities in other EU countries. This promotes not only the growth of Dutch companies but also the economic development of other EU member states. Moreover, Dutch companies attract foreign investment, which contributes to our economy.

Collaboration in the field of research and innovation: The EU encourages cooperation in research and innovation through programs such as Horizon Europe. Through joint research and knowledge exchange, European countries can become more innovative and create new economic opportunities, which benefits the prosperity of all EU member states.
The collaboration between the Horizon Europe program and the EPO in Rijswijk It is important to help European innovators and SMEs protect and commercialize their innovations. The collaboration helps them become more competitive on the global market.

Stability and Security: Economic cooperation within the EU contributes to economic stability and certainty. Sharing a common market and currency promotes financial stability and reduces economic risks for the Netherlands and other EU member states.

In short, economic cooperation in Europe is essential for the prosperity of the Netherlands. It offers access to a large market, stimulates trade and investment, promotes innovation, and ensures economic stability and security. Expats also form an important part of RWIJK GYM's clientele. Therefore, we are following the European elections with interest.

The ins and outs of food

Many food products we consume daily originate from somewhere in Europe. And the Netherlands is a major exporter of food products to European countries. In 2021, the total value of Dutch agri-food exports amounted to €43.5 billion. Approximately 701 TP3T of this went to other EU countries.

It stands to reason that you will make agreements within Europe when it comes to power supply.

European regulations have a significant impact on our food. Here are some ways this happens:

  1. Food safety: The EU has established strict rules and standards for food safety to protect consumers against health risks. This includes guidelines for the use of additives, pesticides, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), as well as regulations on food hygiene and traceability.
  2. Food labeling: European regulations require food producers to provide clear labeling regarding the composition, nutritional value, and origin of food products. Consumers have a right to transparent information about what they consume, including allergens and nutritional claims.
  3. Health claims: The EU has established rules for the use of health claims on food products to prevent misleading information and protect consumers. Only scientifically substantiated claims are permitted, and they must meet strict criteria before being used on food labels.
  4. Nutritional guidelines: The European Commission publishes dietary guidelines and recommendations to promote a healthy diet and address nutrition-related health problems. These guidelines can influence government policy and consumer behaviour regarding nutrition.
  5. Restrictions on marketing and advertising: European regulations restrict the marketing and advertising of foods high in fat, sugar, and salt, particularly targeting children. This is intended to reduce excessive consumption of unhealthy foods and promote public health.
  6. Nutrition programs and subsidies: The EU supports nutrition programmes and subsidies to promote the production and consumption of healthy foods, such as vegetables, fruit, and organic products. This contributes to encouraging healthy eating habits and reducing nutrition-related diseases.

All in all, European regulations have a significant impact on our food and play an important role in ensuring food safety, transparency, and the health and well-being of consumers within the EU.

Europe and interfaces with a healthy lifestyle

Health and Welfare Policy

One of the ways in which the European Elections can impact a healthy lifestyle is through the policies adopted in the European Parliament. European legislation and policy measures can influence various aspects of health and well-being, such as food supply, environmental regulations, healthcare systems, and measures against tobacco and alcohol use.

Nutrition and Food Safety

European regulations play an important role in ensuring food safety and promoting healthy eating habits. Policies aimed at reducing added sugars, salt, and saturated fats in food products, as well as improving food labeling, can contribute to a healthier diet for European citizens.

Environmental Policy and Health

In addition, environmental policy adopted at the European level can also affect people's health. Measures to promote clean air, water quality, and sustainable urban planning can all contribute to a healthier living environment and the reduction of health risks.

Healthcare Systems and Prevention

European elections can also affect the financing and organization of healthcare systems within the EU. Policies aimed at promoting preventive care, such as screening programs and health education, can help improve the health of European citizens and reduce the burden of disease.

Citizen Participation and Awareness

Finally, European Elections play a role in promoting citizen participation and awareness regarding health issues. By voting for representatives committed to health promotion and prevention, citizens can contribute to fostering a healthier society for everyone.
