Energy Consumption in Your Daily Life: Move More Without Extra Sports Clothing
Did you know that your body burns energy throughout the day – even while you sleep? Your breathing, digestion, brain activity, and recovery processes all require energy. We call this basal metabolism. But everyday activities such as getting dressed, cooking, or climbing the stairs also contribute significantly to your daily consumption.
ADL vs. sport: the unexpected energy hero
We often distinguish two forms of activity:
- ADL (Activities of Daily Living): Think of walking, cleaning, gardening, social interaction, or hobbies.
- Sport or training: Targeted physical exertion such as fitness, running, or group classes.
Although exercise is known as the ultimate way to burn calories, it turns out that activities of daily living (ADL) have a major impact when added up over the entire day. It is the 'ordinary' things that are often underestimated.
What determines your energy consumption?
How much energy you consume in a day depends on various factors:
- Your level of daily physical activity
- Fitness, energy level and muscle mass
- Your weight
- And even your mood!
A striking fact: people who exercise often unconsciously compensate by resting or sitting more for the rest of the day. This negates the benefit of their training. Staying active throughout the day is therefore at least as important!
Small actions, big impact
Sport is essential for muscle building, health, and fitness. But if you also want to burn calories or want to fall off, the gains lie mainly in an active lifestyle. Think small: getting up more often, taking a short walk, taking the stairs, or even dancing to your favorite song.
Challenge of the day
Take a moment today to consciously reflect on your movement. Can you:
- Get up from your chair more often?
- Taking the stairs instead of the elevator?
- Get your own coffee or tea?
- Want to take a quick walk while on the phone?
Try to incorporate at least 5 extra moments of physical activity.Write them down and see how many you have collected tonight!
- Keep moving – every step counts!
