Are you a resident of Rijswijk (or the surrounding area) and have you noticed that you have been moving less lately? Perhaps you skip gym visits more often, sit still for longer, and are less active in your daily life. You are certainly not alone.
Almost all of us know that moving more is good for body and mind. And we’d certainly like to. But... busy, busy, busy. No time to go to the gym or to go for a long walk or bike ride. Fortunately, you don't always have to leave the house to get moving.
You can also literally take more steps at home.
The most important tip? Do more yourself.
We have become good at doing things cleverly and efficiently. But sometimes “efficient” is also just complacency or laziness. Do you recognize this?
- You put something down at the bottom of the stairs “just in case you have to go upstairs”.
- You ask your partner or child to bring something along or do something for you.
- You take all your snacks and drinks with you while watching Netflix, so you don't have to get up again.
- You wait to clean up until there is a whole pile that can be taken upstairs “all at once,” or until someone else does it for you.
- You stay seated on the couch while on the phone, even though you could have walked.
That is how sitting still slowly creeps in.
Time for a fresh approach!
Give your body what it needs: movement. Small actions already make a difference – and you don't have to put on a workout outfit.
Assignment for today
Make a list of things you are going to do yourself at home again from now on, instead of postponing them or leaving them to someone else. Think about:
- Get your own cup of coffee, tea, or drink
- Bringing something up immediately instead of letting it sit
- Get up yourself if you have forgotten something, instead of asking someone else
- Take the laundry out of the machine, hang it up, and, when dry, fold it immediately and put it back in the cupboard.
- Vacuum more often, wash the windows, take out the trash, empty the dishwasher, or work on the garden
- Walking through the house while on the phone
Write down what you are going to actively do again starting now — and start today. Little effort, big effect.
Do you feel like you could use a little push in the right direction with this?
You are not alone. For many people, exercising under supervision is exactly the push they need to really get moving again – and to stick with it.
