Stop met “goed” en “slecht” eten zo bouw je een ontspannen relatie met voeding

Many people unconsciously divide food into two camps: good or bad. That seems clear, but in practice, it often leads to anxiety, guilt, and stress surrounding food. And it is precisely that which stands in the way of lasting results.

At RWIJK GYM, we don't believe in strict rules or prohibitions, but in insight, structure, and realistic choices that fit your life.

The problem is rarely the food itself.

People almost never get into trouble due to one specific food, unless there is an allergy or intolerance. What does often go wrong, however, is the meaning we attach to food.

Food is quick to label “bad” because of calories, sugar, fat, or salt. But your body does not react to just one product or one meal; It responds to the big picture. Health is not a moment, but a pattern. Moreover, eating behavior is influenced by emotions, environment, habits, and expectations.

Problems usually arise from consistently eating too little and compensating later, being too strict and going overboard, working with forbidden rules, and linking food to guilt and shame.

Why 'forbidden food' doesn't work

As soon as something is forbidden, it becomes more attractive. Not due to a lack of discipline, but because our brain is sensitive to scarcity.

Many people recognize this cycle: strict rules, sticking to them through willpower, relapse or binge, guilt, and then becoming even stricter. This is not failure, but a predictable reaction to a system that does not align with human behavior. Sometimes the relationship with food becomes unhealthier, while you think you are eating healthier.

What you would be better off focusing on

Sustainable choices arise from behavior you can sustain. Think of eating foods your body responds well to, moderation without perfection, eating plant-based foods more often for fiber and satiety, and being more mindful of ultra-processed foods. Not because something is forbidden, but because nourishing choices benefit you more.

In addition, it helps to eat based on hunger and function rather than just emotion, to stop when full, and above all, to enjoy food. Pleasure is not a weakness, but essential for a healthy lifestyle.

Mini-assignment: 7 days without labels

For the next seven days, choose one eating moment daily where you do not label the food as “good” or “bad.” Note what you ate, why you chose it, how you felt before and after, and what you might want to change, without judgment. The goal is awareness, not correction.
