You probably know the feeling: you’ve just eaten something, but you still feel hungry. Frustrating – especially when you’re trying to watch your diet. Fortunately, you can ensure greater satiety with smart choices. Simply put, satiety means feeling full after a meal. But how does that actually work?
What happens in your body?
In your body, various hormones play a role in the feeling of hunger:
- Leptin gives your brain the signal that you have eaten enough.
- Ghreline rises if you haven't eaten for a while and causes hunger.
In addition, insulin contributes to satiety. So it is not as black and white as “full = enough eaten”. Your body works with signals that do not always correspond exactly to your actual energy needs.
Your head plays a part too.
Satiety is more than just physical. Your thoughts, habits, and environment have a major influence. For example, if you eat in a group, you often eat more than when you are alone. Stress, boredom, or distractions (such as watching TV while eating) can also cause you to eat more without realizing it.
What can you do to feel fuller?
Everyone is different, but these tips help many people experience more satiety:
- Eat fiber-rich foods – whole grains, vegetables, fruit and legumes.
- Choose proteins – eggs, dairy, fish, chicken, tofu or beans.
- Drink enough water – thirst is often confused with hunger.
- Eat mindfully – avoid mindless snacking.
- Go for volume – products like strawberries are filling, but contain few calories.
- Combine nutrients – a mix of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats is more satiating than simple sugars.
- Keep your portions consistent – your body gets used to a certain volume.
- Make meals more substantial – a thick soup is more filling than a light broth.
The key: discover what works for you
Not every body reacts the same way. It is therefore important to test for yourself which foods and habits truly satisfy you.
Assignment: Test your satiety
Experiment with your meals over the next two weeks:
- Choose different products or meals daily.
- Give them a score of 0 to 10:
- 0 = not saturated at all
- 10 = fully saturated
- Note down what you ate, when you ate it, how you felt, and whether you snacked afterward.
After two weeks, you will have insight into what works best for you. With that knowledge, you can make smarter choices and positively influence your eating habits.
Finally
Becoming more satisfied isn't about enjoying food less, but about making smarter choices. By eating more consciously and discovering what truly fills you, you gain more control over your diet and get closer to your goals.
